ABOUT
Sirius Arts Centre is a multidisciplinary non-profit centre for the arts located in Cork County in Ireland. Founded in 1988, Sirius is dedicated to facilitating artistic expression in Ireland. Our yearly programming raises artistic awareness, provides opportunities for participation in and enjoyment of the arts, this is achieved through visual arts exhibitions, an artists-in-residence programme, music concerts and community engagement programmes. The Sirius Arts Centre's building, formerly the Royal Cork Yacht Club, provides the organization with a unique environment, and revitalises an important architectural gem on the banks of Cork Harbour.
WHAT WE DO
Visual Arts Programme
Representing Irish and international artists of excellence, Sirius exhibits some of the finest contemporary artists, both emerging and established. Sirius has a long history of presenting a wide range of artistic practice from photography to sound, painting to installation.
Artist-In-Residence
Sirius Arts Centre has been developing its Artist in Residence programme for over a decade. The programme receives funding from the Arts Council and Cork County Council and is recognised internationally. Residents live in a basement apartment in the Sirius Arts Centre’s building, located in the centre of Cobh, 20 minutes by train from Cork City. The flat, a four bedroom two bathroom apartment has its own kitchen and work area, within walking distance of transportation and Cobh town centre. The Artist in Residency programme at Sirius provides residential and some work space to visual artists, either individuals or groups.
Community Engagement
Sirius Arts Centre recognises the importance that arts practice can have in building self confidence, creativity and citizenship within our community. As part of our programming throughout the year we organize Community Engagement events which include workshops, lectures and exhibitions. Many of the projects are linked with our artist in residency programme and local arts professionals. Sirius Arts Centre matches different community groups with practising Visual Artists, Authors and Musicians, developing projects and activities that are of interest to all ages.
Music
Since 1995 Sirius Arts Centre has hosted regular concerts of contemporary and traditional music in the West Gallery. Performers have included: Damien Rice, Hugh Tinney, The 4 of Us, Freddie White, Interference with Paul Tiernan, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Charlie Piggott, Juliet Turner, the late Ronnie Drew, Damien Dempsey, Glen Hansard, North Cregg, Declan O’Rourke, Sharon Shannon and many others.
